In the November 2014 issue, Gun Tests Magazine evaluated four 380 ACP pocket pistols, one of which was a P238 from SIG Sauer. It retails for as little as $500, and we found it priced all the way up to $583 at some online sources we checked. The P238 was introduced in 2009, and this model, Number 238-380-NBS12, was our third test of SIG Sauer’s small 380s. We expected it and a Colt XSP to be the easiest to shoot because of their single-action triggers, but we were disappointed. The SIG’s single-action break weight averaged out to be 8.0 pounds, but its break range was from 6.8 pounds to 8.8 pounds, depending on where the trigger finger met the shoe. The inconsistency hurt accuracy. We liked the SIG’s large night sights. But because of the sights, the P238 needs to be carried in a holster or a large pocket. The smaller Kahr CW 380 was a better pocket choice. The laser for the P238 was nicely integrated under the barrel and around the trigger guard, and it really helped us shoot more accurately. We shot average groups of 1.8 inches at 10 yards with the laser, but about 3-inch groups without it.
