In about 30 - 40% ,the cornea is not normal in shape. If it is spherical like not only the cornea, but also the eye ball. A perfect eye ball should be spherical, like a ball. But in some people, the shape is something like an egg, different curvatures at different points. This is what we callas Astigmatism and these people have cylindrical power. A normal multifocal IOL’s or monofocal IOL’s when used will reduce this cylindrical power. Special lenses are made in such a way that it compensated to the extra power in that particular axis and these are implanted into the patient. Care has to be taken that it is implanted in that particular surface only. We need some specialized equipment’s which helps during the surgery. The advantage of toric lenses is complete freedom from glasses when compared to a monofocal IOL.
