Introduction : In Jan 2007, FBI agents searched the home of a 41 year old restaurant manager after a tip that a white pickup truck like his was used to kidnap a 13 year old boy, inside they found another missing boy in what became known as the “Missouri Miracle.” What happened : On Oct. 6, 2002, 11-year-old Shawn Hornbeck was riding his lime green bike to a friend’s house near Richwoods, Missouri, a small town just outside of St. Louis. Shawn always took the same route and his parents trusted him to ride alone. As he was going through the small-town streets he was bumped by a white truck. The driver,37-year-old Mike Devlin rushed to Shawn and appeared to be concerned for his safety. In a split second, Devlin kidnapped Shawn, telling the boy that he “was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.” Devlin took him to an apartment in nearby Kirkwood, kept him tied up for a month, physically abused him and threatened to kill him if he tried to call for help or escape. Delvin also woke him every 45 minutes in an apparent attempt to control him. Four years later Shawn became too old for Devlin’s liking and On Jan. 8, 2007, Devlin abducted 13 year old Ben Ownby at a school bus stop in Beaufort, Missouri. But this time, Devlin was seen kidnapping the boy. 15 year old Mitchell Hults heard Ben’s cries and reported the truck to the police, Shawn was with him in the pickup. Once it started to rain, they asked him if he wanted to sit in their car for shelter. He sat with Willett in the back seat, The pair talked for hours. “We sat and spoke for quite a while,” Willett told the paper. “I had a sense very early on, based on the way he was answering questions, that it wasn’t quite adding up.” Willett said Devlin broke after she told him that tire tracks could be crucial evidence in Ownby’s disappearance. “I’m a bad person,” he confessed to her. He admitted to abducting Ownby. But that wasn’t his only crime. “He said, ‘I have Shawn [Hornbeck, missing since 2002].’. Then Devlin took the agents to his ground-floor one-bedroom apartment nearby. He was told to go in first, so as to not raise any alarm with the boys. Inside, Hornbeck and Ownby were “playing video games.” That night, Franklin County Sheriff Glen Toelke announced that both boys were found and alive. Their discovery became known as the “Missouri Miracle.” And Devlin was arrested and charged with 80 counts of sexual assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder. Legal proceeding: On October 6, prosecutors announced that Devlin would plead guilty to all charges against him in all four jurisdictions. That fall, Devlin pleaded guilty in four courthouses of multiple counts of kidnapping and sexual assault, and was sentenced to 74 life sentences in Missouri prison for a total of more than 4,000 years and 170 years of federal time. And since January 30, 2008 He remains in a protective-custody wing of the state Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron, in northwestern Missouri. #truecrimes#child-victim#prison#life-in-prison#FBI-agents#41-year-old #restaurant-manager #white-pickup-truck #13-year-old-boy#Missouri-Miracle#Shawn-Hornbeck#bike#Richwoods,#Missouri#St.Louis.#MikeDevlin#Ben-Ownby#school-bus#Beaufort#Mitchell-Hults#Kirkwood#plead-guilty#74-life-sentences#more-than-4,000-years#170-years-of-federal
