Ferrari 156 Sharknose at Goodwood Festival of Speed This car is a replica of the famous early 1960’s Ferrari 156 Sharknose. The original was driven by Phil Hill amongst others to his 1961 F1 championship. On September 10 1961, another 156 driven by Wolfgang von Trips collided with Jim Clark’s lotus in the Italian GP. The Ferrari became airbourne, crashed into a barrier and into the watching crowd. Von Trips and 15 spectators were killed in this accident. When it finished its racing career, Enzo Ferrari had every remaining 156 destroyed. They were cut up and added to concrete which was being poured into the base of a new wing at the Ferrari factory. This was very unusual as it was a championship winning car however it was speculated that the decision was made due to the fatal crash. Since that day the car was largely forgotten until modern times. A few replicas have since surfaced including the two that were present at the Goodwood festival of speed on this weekend! Two! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I collected the scalextric model years ago and thought it was a fantastic looking car but I never thought I’d come across one in the flesh. Chris Rea had a replica of one built in the late 199O’s for the movie La Passione which was about the life of Wolfgang Von Trips. This car was painted yellow at one point however its been red too. I’ve seen photo’s of it but never in the flesh. I believe that was the first replica built. There was another that was built around 2017 in the Uk which has been doing the rounds on revival meets around Europe. I'm not sure if there's any more in existence. It may well be that the two cars that were present in Goodwood were the only two. The smell of petrol and fumes given off from this car and the other F1 cars in the paddock that weekend was completely intoxicating. The workmanship and attention to detail that’s gone into creating this car was incredible too! As always thank you for watching. G
