Blood vessels & hypospadias | Dr Lucas-Herald

Dr Lucas-Herald presents research on the causes of hypospadias, a congenital problem affecting a boy's penis which affects around 1 in 300 male babies. Boys born with hypospadias may not be able to pee standing up, and later may also have difficulties with maintaining an erection and having sex unless the problem is treated, usually with surgery. Dr Lucas-Herald has undertaken the first study of paediatric subcutaneous resistance arteries to research altered vascular function in boys with hypospadias. Her work has demonstrated that these arteries are disfunctional in baby boys with hypospadias, and that testosterone can improve help vasorelaxion in these boys. She also explores the role of reactive oxygen species in the function of these arteries, and connects this to ongoing work on cardiovascular risk in later life. Dr Angela Lucas-Herald is a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow. Our Clinical Academics in Training Annual Conference, or CATAC, offers early career researchers the chance to present work and receive feedback from senior panelists in a truly interdisciplinary setting. The conference gives clinical academics the chance to meet people from all areas of biomedical science, and share ideas from many different perspectives.
