Join us on an exciting journey as we visit the iconic Futuro house at the Exhibition Centre WeeGee in Espoo, Finland! This fascinating piece of space-age architecture captures the experimental spirit and optimistic ideas of the late 1960s modernism. About the Futuro House The Futuro house, designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen (1933–2013), is an elliptical, plastic house that symbolizes the innovative designs and new materials of its time. Originally commissioned as a skiing lodge, the Futuro was meant to be quick to heat up and easy to construct, even in rough terrain. The first mass-produced Futuro house (no. 001), acquired by Exhibition Centre WeeGee, has a rich history, from being a summer cottage by lake Puulavesi to becoming an iconic exhibit today. Our Visit We explore Futuro no. 001, the first ever mass-produced model, carefully restored and displayed in WeeGee’s yard since 2012. This yellow Futuro was owned by Finnish television personality Matti Kuusla from 1968 to 2011. Walking through this retro-futuristic home, we get a glimpse into the imaginative design and forward-thinking concepts of the 1960s. Futuro's Legacy Despite its initial fame, the Futuro house did not achieve commercial success due to its high cost and the 1973 Oil Crisis, which tripled the price of plastic. However, it has since gained recognition as a 1960s space-age icon and a significant piece of art in the international art world. Today, about 68 Futuro houses remain worldwide, with five in public collections, including WeeGee’s Futuro no. 001. Key Facts about the Futuro House Measurements: Diameter 8 m, Height 4 m, Total weight 4,000 kg. Features: 6 seat-beds, 2 person bedroom, Fireplace-grill-table combination, Kitchen, Toilet, and bathroom. Original color options: White, Yellow, Light blue.
