"Aioi no Matsu (Jap. 相生松): Twin Pine Trees" is a contemporary dance performance inspired by the traditional Japanese Theatre Noh play "Takasago." The narrative unfolds with a Woman and a Man as caretakers of two pine trees on distant shores—Takasago and Sumiyoshi. The Woman tends to the Sumiyoshi tree, and the Man cares for the Takasago tree. United in marriage, their love imbues these trees with an otherworldly quality, transforming them into the symbolic "Aioi no Matsu," representing an eternal connection as legends suggest. The unique physical performance reimagines this traditional tale using contemporary tools like tricking, contemporary dance, movement art, and physical theatre. The play is accompanied by Japanese traditional music, creating a distinct atmosphere. This collaboration showcases the artistic potential of reshaping a traditional story within a modern context, resulting in a truly exceptional and innovative performance.
