This week on the mountain bike frame build, I'm doing the internal cable routing for my dropper seatpost. Truly, I should have done this cable routing step earlier—it would've been a lot easier. But I didn't. So you get to watch me hack my way through it. Here is the playlist of the whole Hardtail Mountain Bike Frame Build—I'll keep adding to it as we go: • Building a Hardtail MTB Frame, Part 1: Ini... Dropper seatposts are relatively new, and there's no single agreed-upon standard for how to route the cable. The cable needs to end up INSIDE the seat tube. I decided to replicate what I've seen some other steel frame builders do: I brazed on a little reinforcing patch (cut from another steel bicycle tube), and then I made a hole in that reinforced area for the cable to pass into the seat tube. So the cable will come down on the down tube and then pass into the seat tube through that hole, and meet the bottom of the dropper seatpost in there. This was a difficult task with the seat tube already welded into the frame and without the right set of tools at my disposal. In the end, I tried a few different tools to get the job done—drill, end mill, hand files, and Dremel. At the end of the video, I also talk about what I'm doing for paint. I'm using some rattle cans from Spray Bike. They were nice enough to give me these cans free as a sponsor, so check them out: https://spraybike.us/ SUBSCRIBE for more videos on bicycle framebuilding: / @cobraframebuilding SHOP MY TOOLS: If you're looking for bicycle framebuilding tools: http://cobraframebuilding.com.
