(8 Sep 2013) Protesters staged a rally outside the United Nations compound in Beirut on Sunday, denouncing a proposed US-led strike against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Supporters of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, a secular pro-Syrian government group, carried pictures of Assad and chanted in his support. Toufic Mhanna, deputy leader of the SSNP, said his party members were "soldiers" in charge of "defending" Syria. "We are Syrians in our identity, commitment and in the national strategic choice," he said. Sunday's protest came amid a series of demonstrations in Lebanon by parties loyal to the Syrian regime. Obama has warned he is ready to launch military strikes on Assad's military forces over its alleged use of chemical weapons. The United States has said at least 1,429 people, including more than 400 children, were killed in the attack, based on intelligence reports. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights however, which collects information from a network of anti-government activists in Syria, says it has been compiling a list of the names of the dead and that its toll has reached 502.
