In this post, you can see the homes and lifestyles of the Khasi tribe people living in a landslide-prone area in the state of Meghalaya. Meghalaya village life is a rich blend of tradition, nature, and community living. The state is home to several indigenous tribes like the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo, each with their own unique customs and lifestyle. Villages are often surrounded by lush green hills, forests, rivers, and waterfalls. Agriculture is the main livelihood – people grow rice, maize, broom grass, oranges, pineapples, and betel leaves. Many villages are located on hilltops or slopes and offer breathtaking views Traditional houses are made from bamboo, wood, and stone, with sloped tin or thatched roofs. The Khasi houses are often raised on stilts. Cleanliness is a major cultural value. For example, Mawlynnong village is known as “Asia’s Cleanest Village.” The society is matrilineal, especially among the Khasi and Jaintia tribes — lineage and inheritance pass through the mother. Women have a strong role in family and community life. Villages have a community-centric lifestyle, with joint farming, shared water sources, and local governance (Dorbar Shnong). Villagers celebrate many festivals like: Shad Suk Mynsiem (Khasi thanksgiving dance festival) Wangala (Garo harvest festival) Behdeinkhlam (Jaintia festival to drive away plague and evil spirits) Folk songs, dances, and bamboo instruments are part of daily and festive life. Skilled in weaving, cane and bamboo craft, blacksmithing, and pottery. Women often weave their own clothes like the ‘Jainsem’ (Khasi dress). The Khasi tribe is one of the major indigenous tribes of Meghalaya, mainly inhabiting the Khasi Hills region. They are known for their unique matrilineal society, vibrant festivals, and close connection with nature. Origin and Language The Khasis are believed to be part of the Mon-Khmer ethnic group (linked to Southeast Asia). Their language is called Khasi, part of the Austroasiatic language family. Khasi is written using the Roman script and is rich in folklore and oral traditions. Matrilineal Society Lineage and inheritance pass through the mother. The youngest daughter, known as “Ka Khadduh,” inherits the ancestral property. Children take their mother’s surname, and men live in their mother-in-law’s house after marriage. Women play a central role in family and economic life, though political leadership is still often male-dominated. Lifestyle and Occupation Most Khasis live in villages surrounded by hills and forests. Main occupations: farming, betel nut cultivation, weaving, and bamboo crafts. They follow traditional and sustainable agricultural practices like jhum (shifting cultivation) and terrace farming. Religion and Beliefs Many Khasis follow Christianity, introduced by missionaries during the colonial period. Some still practice the traditional Niam Khasi religion, which believes in ‘U Blei’ (the Creator) and ancestor worship. Sacred groves (like Mawphlang Sacred Forest) are central to their spiritual life. Festivals and Culture Shad Suk Mynsiem – A major spring festival, known as the "Dance of Peaceful Hearts" Nongkrem Dance – Celebrated by the Syiem (chief) and priestesses to invoke blessings Traditional dress includes: Men: Jymphong (a sleeveless coat) Women: Jainsem and Tapmohkhlieh (wrap-around and shawl) meghalaya tribes, meghalaya tribal village, meghalaya tribals, north east villages, north east tribes, north east tribal village, north east tribals, khasi tribes in meghalaya, khasi tribal in meghalaya, khasi tribal village in meghalaya, dangerous landslide area in north east, landslide area in meghalaya, tribal houses in meghalaya, tribal village in meghalaya, tribal village in khasi hills, khasi hills in meghalaya, east khasi hills in meghalaya, tribal village in tamil, unseen village life in meghalaya, meghalaya village life, north east village life in tamil.
