On a cold winter evening in December 2022, the 23-year-old me dared to knock on the door of one of the most eminent scholars of our time, Sibaji Bandopadhyay. I was a novice—armed with nothing but an unruly curiosity and an unquenchable thirst for understanding. I questioned him in whatever way I could, clumsily, urgently, sometimes without knowing how to frame my thoughts. And yet, without losing his patience—or his composure—he answered every question with a generosity that felt almost rare. This was December 2022. Years later, in 2025, he would deliver a formal lecture on the “ami–tumi–se” semiotic structure of Rabindranath Tagore’s songs—but that evening, I encountered those ideas in their most intimate form: as conversation, as listening, as grace. It was through that meeting that I discovered Tagore—and Satyajit Ray—anew, from angles I hadn’t known existed. I live in Nangi, in South 24 Parganas, about twenty kilometres away from his Dover Lane residence. The distance is modest on a map—but that night, it felt like a crossing: from curiosity to insight, from admiration to initiation.
