The VCS collects high-quality seeds from native Victorian plants for long-term storage, research and restoration, mainly targeting seed from rare or threatened species. The VCS team is supporting DELWP’s bushfire response and recovery program, salvaging priority species at risk of extinction as a result of catastrophic bushfires. DELWP supported the Gardens through provision of key diagnostic equipment, including a medical-grade x-ray cabinet, used to gauge the quality of seed material gathered during critical salvage work. This will ensure that only viable material is stored, and gradually build up a picture of viability on a per-species basis, informing our collection strategies.
