Cycle World completes a hot lap at Thunderhill Raceway aboard the 2019 Ducati Panigale V4 S. The current crop of literbikes are built with everything needed to strive for the perfect lap time. As part of the 2019 Cycle World Superbike Shootout, we pitted the best of the best against each other, then let them out to set their respective times. Here, the Ducati Panigale V4 S burns its hot lap, competing against the BMW S 1000 RR, and Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory for bragging rights of the fastest in this year’s bunch. We chose Thunderhill Raceway Park’s 15-turn, 3-mile east course as the testing facility for this year’s edition of the shootout. A mix of sweeping corners, dramatic elevation changes, long straightaways, and taunting braking zones put every aspect of performance under scrutiny. To ensure a fair comparison, we spooned fresh Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC race rubber onto each competitor and sent road test editor and full-time MotoAmerica racer Michael Gilbert out for a hot lap. The Ducati Panigale V4 S was second in rotation. Clicking two downshifts from fifth to third gear and utilizing top-shelf Brembo braking componentry at the end of Thunderhill's front straightaway shines light on the Ducati's supreme corner entry composure and speed. Every corner, it begs to be pushed a little further. Through long sweeping turns 1, 2, and 3, the Panigale's traction and slide control aids manage wheelspin flawlessly, helping point the V-4 in the right direction. The last sector of the track, however, the Ducati struggles to keep ahead. Hard acceleration zones induce a rear-end chassis pump that hinders the Panigale's ability to effectively lurch off of corners. The consequence is the lowest top speed of the bunch—only 160.97 mph. At the checkered flag, the Ducati Panigale V4 S clocked a 1:54.40—less than a half-second slower than the fastest recording by the Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory.
