PCRI's Executive Director, Mark Scholz, MD, explains why there was recently a spike in the popularity of pomegranate juice in the prostate cancer world, and why its popularity has since waned. 0:05 The use of pomegranate to fight prostate cancer was common practice around five or six years ago. It was based on the results of a phase II trial that found a reduction in the rate of PSA increase in patients who were consuming pomegranate. 0:36 Unfortunately, once it was subjected to the rigors of a phase III trial (prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled) researchers found no significant difference in PSA or the rate of PSA change between those who were consuming pomegranate and those who were consuming a placebo. It turns out that a decline in the rate of change when PSA is increasing is a common occurrence even without treatment, and so using that as a benchmark in the Phase II trial was not the most effective method for testing its efficacy. 1:25 As of the making of this video, prostate cancer experts are not recommending pomegranate juice for the treatment of prostate cancer. That is not to say that it is not effective for anything else—on that issue Dr. Scholz is agnostic. Don’t know your stage?
