Compressible Flow Lesson Series - Lesson 08B: Qualitative Shock Tube Analysis In this 16-minute video, Professor John Cimbala compares a piston-driven shock tube to a "real" shock tube in which a diaphragm breaks at time zero. He explains how a contact surface works similarly to the piston except that there can be no pressure jump across the contact surface. It is assumed that students have already taken an undergraduate fluid mechanics course (for which Professor Cimbala also has a popular video lesson series on his YouTube channel). The video lessons and notes closely follow the notes that Professor Cimbala uses when he teaches the course. Except for a few potential notation issues, however, these video lessons may be useful as a free resource at other schools and for anyone wishing to learn about fluid mechanics, and specifically, compressible flow.
