On March 11, 2011 a powerful earthquake accompanied by a tsunami struck the northeast coast of Japan, almost completely destroying Kesennuma’s historic structures and fishing port. Along with other sites in East Japan, Kesennuma was included on the 2012 and 2014 World Monuments Watch cycles to raise awareness about the challenges this coastal area was facing. Thanks to the support of the Freeman Foundation, WMF was able to start working in Kesennuma in 2013. We are working with the local community on the restoration of six traditional townhouses, also known as machiya. Once restored, these historic structures will serve as community hubs to encourage post-disaster recovery and resilience.
