"More Like a Dream" by American Steel was originally released in 2003 on the third and final volume of the Lookout! Freakout compilation series. It was also, at the time of its release, the last song by American Steel, who had headlined their own funeral in May 2002 and were gone at the drop of a hat. The year 2000 saw drummer Scott Healy - who had featured on the first two American Steel full-lengths - part ways with the band. He was replaced by Jamie Kissinger, who had previously served as the drummer for the band in their first two years (1995-1996). They then released their third full-length, "Jagged Thoughts," in 2001; it was to be their last on the soon-doomed Lookout! Records. For one reason or another, Jagged Thoughts didn't seem to catch on with all the fans of their previous work; personally, it has some of my favorite American Steel songs: 'New Religion Every Day," "Shrapnel," "Rainy Day," and the heavy Clash-influenced tracks "Two Crooks" and "I Don't Mind." Nevertheless, American Steel called it quits the following year, but not without working on some new material first. "More Like a Dream" is at once heavy and haunting. The first verse (starting @ :46), coming in off that organ motif with the drums pounding and the clean, arpeggiated guitar harmonies giving way to the i-VII-VI progression with just the right amount of tube break-up... and then some of my favorite lyrics of all time: Look at my cloven hooves Look at my paraplegic strut I wish you'd do me in, I wish you'd rub me out So I'd awake With a gun in my mouth Wide eyed for the first time
