In this vdo I present the examination of a set of NTN bearings taken from my Hambini BB86. I painstakingly detail a sure fire method to avoid buying fakes, how to locate an authentic source in your neighborhood, and eventually the vdo turns attention to a discussion of bearing tolerances and codes. I had cause to pull the bearings from my BB after about 500k, apparently relating to the damage that I visited upon them during my faulty first install attempt. It was a mistake learning on the job, but mistakes happen, and I’m unfazed by the depths of my own. I never surprise myself anymore. Mistake, dumbass mistake, or whatever, but it proved an opportunity to do a deep dive into the NTN 6805LLB parts which the good Doctor installed when he sold me the unit. Additionally, my mistake pointed out that I ought to know more about bearings. Watching YouTube vids is all well and good, but a little research, study and learning from the source is what I needed. To that end I spent a couple mornings poring over the NTN website, studying about what tolerances apply, what they mean, and how different bearings for different applications require different types, tolerances, and levels of precision to those tolerances. In this video I show what I discovered by examining the externals of the damaged bearings. I walk the viewer through what tolerance tables refer to as the Boundary Dimensions, what three particular facets of bearing tolerances mostly comprise the focus of these tables, and how to understand bearing codes as well. As it happens, there’s plenty to know without even popping the seals off. Please check it out if you have time. In a series of related follow up posts, I will look at the internals. and talk about my findings. I will actually display a new set of NTN bearings (unboxing them). I will describe the construction, the seals, the races, the bearing cage construction, how things work, and how these particular bearings differ from contact sealed bearings. I also compare the identification data to be found on the new bearings to the old set. All in all, a fine unboxing and presentation.
