D9537 (AKA "Eric") was successfully started up after being stored un-serviceable for over 20 years, now in the custody of the D9537 loco group, it is currently being returned to working order in time for the East Lancs Railway, 14's@50 Event to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the introduction of the Class 14's to British Railways Western Region in 1964, D9537 came to the East Lancs in early March 2013 and was in poor condition due to many years of external storage, the engine had seized due to ingress of rain water down the uncovered exhaust pipe, the engine has since been stripped and rebuilt using a combination of parts from three other power units, and is now fully rebuild and refitted to the loco, an aborted start up attempt was made on Saturday 24th May but mostly due to sticking fuel pumps and a faulty starter motor it failed to run then only managing to fire on 2 cylinders, over the following fortnight work was undertaken to resolve the issues and another start-up attempt made on Saturday 7th June, this time it was a success, the first start was a little lethargic as it took time to fire up and run on its own without the starter motoring it, but it did eventually go but was very smoky and running kinda lumpy, so it was stopped and an initial timing adjustment made to the fuel pumps, the second start it fired up straight away but was still smoking and firing a little unevenly, so after another fine tuning of the pumps the third start was made and the engine fired right up with hardly any smoke, the throttle was increased a few times and the engine seemed to respond well, further start-up were made throughout the day with more small adjustments made and the engine sounding better and better each time, with the engine now operating nicely attention turns to the Air system which has many small air leaks, also the reverser mechanism is an untested and will require some fault finding before the loco will be able to move under its own power, but work is continuing apace and D9537 should be ready for its return to traffic debut at the 14's@50 event on the ELR 25th to 27th July 2014
