55 years have passed since John Lewis led a nonviolent protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama as part of a cumulative effort to secure the right to vote for Black people. They were met with a show of force—lined troopers, baton in hand, tear gas—a vicious scene that captured the attention of the Nation and President to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Standing on the bridge in March of 2020 for his final time, Lewis continues to embody love as a guiding force and reminds us to keep the faith, resist silence, and speak up in the face of injustice.
