One of them is IMPERFECTIVE / БРАТЬ and is used for regular actions (я всегда беру с собой сумку/ I always take a bag with me) or being concentrated on the moment of taking (сейчас я беру книгу со стола/ I'm taking a book from the table) The other one is PERFECTIVE / ВЗЯТЬ and is used for an accomplished action (я взял книгу в библиотеке / I took a book from the library, done!) or an action that is planned to be accomplished (завтра я возьму книгу в библиотеке / tomorrow I'll take a book from the library, I'll be done with it) Sounds messy, doesn't it? Let's take both verbs and compare them in context! Обычно я брала в библиотеке книгу, а сегодня взяла журнал / usually I took a book from the library, but today I took a magazine.
