Otjinene resident Martha Tjo, a wheelchair user, is struggling to improve her livelihood and urgently needs proper housing that can accommodate her and her family. Tjo (47) was born and raised in Otjinene, a place she has always called home despite the many hardships she faces. She lives with her family, including four children, in a small, slowly deteriorating house that offers little protection, especially during the rainy season. At times, she is forced to sleep outside because the house is too small to accommodate all twelve members of the family. Speaking from her home, her voice heavy with sadness, she explained that the structure leaks badly whenever it rains, allowing water to pour inside and leaving her family exposed to flooding. According to Tjo, this has been their reality for many years, forcing them to endure unsafe and uncomfortable living conditions with little hope of immediate relief. The situation, she said, has taken a serious toll on her health. After contracting tuberculosis in 2024, Tjo remains vulnerable to frequent fevers, and the cold, damp conditions in the house only worsen her condition. In addition to the need for proper housing, Tjo also expressed concern about access to adequate healthcare services. Given her physical disability and ongoing health challenges, she believes improved medical support is essential not only for her well-being but also for her dignity and quality of life. "I have been sick for some time. I first contracted tuberculosis and later became paralysed, which left me unable to walk. I urgently need assistance with a proper shelter because I do not have a decent home. Occasionally, I am forced to sleep outside, and then it starts to rain. I need assistance, please." Despite the challenges she faces daily, Tjo, whose dependants live on social grants, remains hopeful that her situation will one day improve, allowing her and her family to live in safer conditions and look toward a more secure future. #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
