Only ethnic Georgians live in the Gal region of Abkhazia. One of their biggest problems is that the majority cannot obtain documents, not only an Abkhaz passport but even a residence permit. In 2014, the Abkhaz Parliament’s decision led to the revocation of Abkhaz passports for over 30,000 Gal region residents. The primary reason cited was the possession of Georgian citizenship, which is prohibited by Abkhaz law. For most locals, obtaining even a residence permit proves exceedingly difficult, if not impossible. Konstantin Pilia, the head of the Gal district administration, shared specific examples with the editor of “Chegemskaya Pravda”/editor of JAMnews in Abkhazia, Inal Khashig, underscoring the severity of this problem, the challenges in resolving it, and the importance of facilitating rather than hindering the integration of Gal Georgians into Abkhaz society. Additionally addressed were: ● The significance of Georgian-Abkhaz trade, hampered by numerous obstacles on both sides. ● The prosperous growth of agricultural ventures in the Gal region, encompassing blueberry plantations and eucalyptus seedlings. ● Challenges in tourism, with an extraordinary sea coast once deemed elite during the Soviet era, now lacking roads, water, electricity, and other essential infrastructure. ● The considerable investment appeal of the area.
