I realize that washes are not a common technique with hot press- but I wanted a wash to tone the paper. Drytime: 5:20 When paper has been wet, significant buckling despite stretching and securing with binder clips 5:32- Paper is cool to the touch, but surface dry. STill somewhat buckled 5:35: Applied gradiated wash of yellow ocher at bottom. Allowing to dry. 5:48: Ochre is still surface damp. Yellow is cool to touch 5:59- Applied layer of Yellow ochre for hay- Still wet at 6:12 6:12- Mix ultramarine with cool yellow, aply th b/g as grass. Allow to dry. 7:09 fully dry Applied pink to interior of rabbit ear- paper has sorta a chewed up texture- not sure if that's from inking and erasing or from stretching hotpress. Surface dried flat with no noticable disturbance 12:37: Allowed to dry overnight. Applied watercolor pencils, which due to the smooth texture, is a bit morde difficult to apply Ended up having to reink- colors seem to be a bit more opaque on hotpress Bluetape really eats this paper up- be careful when you're removing it from the support- always remove your tape perpendicular to the paper (i.e. pull away, not towards), so that tearing happens on the white edge, not into your illustration Hotpress seems to respond best when you're working with thicker mixtures of color Light layers and glazes are not this paper's friend- the sort of light pink blush you could add after adding skintone won't really work on this hotpress Although the Stonehenge Aqua Hotpress handles better than other hot press papers I've used, I still find that the pigments mostly sit on the surface of the paper. I've used this paper in the past, and was quite satisfied with how it handled ect, so perhaps the use shown in this video is just the wrong use. I'll have to revisit this paper at another time to better decide. Stonehenge Aqua Coldpress Much more surface texture than the HP Applied an all over wash of warm yellow- 9:22 Some paper rippling 9:29- soaked in, but still buckled and cool/damp to the touch 9:42- Mostly dry 9:50- resumation of painting Paint remains blendable longer on the CP than on the HP- HP took forever to dry, but wasn't easily blendable. CP is a bit faster to soak in/dry, but remains workable a little longer Dries faster and lighter than the Stonehenge Aqua CP- about on par with other cottonrag CP papers I have a much easier time handling paint on this paper, even with it's texture, than I did on the hotpress. I find colors easier to manipulate as well. Paper can take more layers Texture of the paper takes color pencil/watercolor pencil better. Paper can take more layers, takes blending better. Colors dry a little softer- more like other cottonrag coldpress papers. Colors seem to be a little less opaque on this paper than they were on the hotpress- perhaps bc pigments can soak into the fibers? Did not need to reink this for clarity. In general, I prefer their coldpress to their hotpress, but their hotpress is still an excellent hotpress. #watercolor #watercolorfieldtest #watercolorpaper
