Cemento Atlantico - Garawek Khaos (official videoclip) 18° 47' 15.481" N 98° 59' 14.856" E 13° 45' 35.159” N 100° 29' 44.296” E intro (1930) “I should like you to see with me, something of the land of Siam, a land of strange contrasts. Here we have the only independent absolute monarchy existing today, yet the people enjoy as much freedom as they do anywhere elese in the world. And here we have a strange mixture of east and west: ancient colorful ceremonies side by side with the most modern mechanical improvements. You would feel at home here, as I do, 'cause the siamese are a friendly happy people.” The name Thailand originates from a coup orchestrated in 1932. Before this date, the country was called The Kingdom of Siam (land of free men). The “People’s Party”, a group of rebels, overthrew the absolute monarchy and promulgated the country’s first constitution, thus announcing the rise of a golden age. Nowadays, those who are still protesting argue that the golden age since 1932 has not yet arrived. A royal family and the army both ruling, an actual entropic system: two different entities coexisting at the top despising each other, but that cannot do without each other. Field recordings: • I recorded the melody of the kahen from a street musician near the Wat Phan Tao temple in Chiang May. The khaen is a traditional Laotian and Thai pentatonic scale wind instrument: the air is blown into a tank which activates 14 bamboo pipes equipped with holes for fingering. Its sound is similar to that of the violin, but it was originally created by a woman who was trying to reproduce the call of the Garewek birds that filled the royal gardens. The woman wanted to donate this instrument to the king, and he welcomed the invention by saying "Tia nee Kaen dae" (now it will be better for all of us). But it didn’t quite work out that way. • The singing theme is the result of a recording I was allowed to take during the celebrations of a wedding in Chiang Mai. The oldest woman dedicates a song of good wishes to the young couple, so that they can regain the lost freedom of the Kingdom of Siam. • The protest chants were recorded on the edge of Khaosan Road in Bangkok during a student demonstration against government: the voice of the people against a corrupt elite who try to sell a dystopian dialogue between the king and the armed forces as constitutional.
