WILHELM KEMPFF plays "Deux Légendes" by FRANZ LISZT. The two legends were both written in 1863 during the height of Liszt's obsession with sacred music. He became a Franciscan tertiary only a few years prior and was evidently proud to share his name with the two Saints from Assisi and Paola, the former of course being the one Franziskus to found the order Liszt became a member of. This recording was made in 1951. COMPOSER/PERFORMER: 00:00 1. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI - SERMON TO THE BIRDS: 00:12 The first piece is based on the legend in which St. Francis of Assisi was preaching to birds. The musical depiction of the birds through high-register trills and tremolos functions as a groundbreaking foreshadowing of Impressionism. 2. ST. FRANCIS OF PAOLA - WALKING ON THE WAVES : 10:05 The second piece is based on the legend in which St. Francis of Paola was walking over the Strait of Messina to reach Sicily. The chaotic waves of the water are portrayed by the runs in the bass register and Liszt's intentional use of the key of E Major is once again as almost always reserved for prayer-like compositions like this.
