In this program we focus on the foundation work that was used to create the piers on which the two cable-stayed towers of the new Stan Musial—Veterans Memorial Bridge spanning the Mississippi River now stand. What it is like to design and build a structure to span the most traveled river in America? How far down in the bedrock do the foundations need to go? How do you design for seismic forces and fluctuating river levels and speeds? Explore these questions and more as you see how the foundations were built, what it took to drill the shafts into the bedrock and pour the concrete, and how the waters of the river were dammed off to make construction possible. Viewers will see images and view videos of the construction process as well as interact with the engineer and construction professionals working every day to build the bridge.
