Step back in time to the glorious Vijayanagara Empire! In this video, we explore two of Hampi’s most iconic yet contrasting structures: the terrifyingly beautiful Ugra Narasimha statue and the elegant Queen's Palace (Lotus Mahal). 🦁 Ugra Narasimha (Lakshmi Narasimha): Standing at 6.7 meters (22 feet), this is the largest monolithic statue in Hampi! Carved in 1528 AD during the reign of King Krishnadevaraya, it depicts Lord Narasimha in his fierce ("Ugra") form. The Mystery: Did you know this was originally a "Lakshmi Narasimha" statue? The Goddess Lakshmi was once seated on his lap, but the statue was damaged during the attacks of 1565. If you look closely at the back, you can still see Goddess Lakshmi's hand embracing him! 🪷 The Queen's Palace (Lotus Mahal): Located inside the Zenana Enclosure, this is a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture. Unlike many other ruins in Hampi, this structure is surprisingly intact. Ancient Air Conditioning: The Lotus Mahal was designed with a unique water-cooling system within its walls to keep the Queen cool during the hot Hampi summers. It served as a council chamber and a relaxation spot for the royal women. In this video: Close-up details of the Narasimha statue's eyes and the "missing" Goddess. Walking through the arches of the Lotus Mahal. The history behind the destruction of Hampi.
