Bad things happen to good people, and you or a loved one might find yourselves in a situation where you are a subject in a federal investigation. David Tarras from the Rossen Law Firm is a private federal trial lawyer in South Florida who has met many individuals who have found themselves in this type of difficult situation. He has been practicing law for many years and fought many cases in both the State and Federal Courts in Florida. In this video, he explains what to do if a federal authority contacts you and uses a $57 million Ponzi scheme case he won as an example. There are different types of federal authorities and different ways they can make contact with you. They can be from the Department of Defense, the FBI or National Security. They can send you a letter, a subpoena, or even come knocking on your door. When they make contact with you, the authorities are investigating you as either a witness, suspect, or target. When a federal agent makes contact with you, the first step you should take, according to the federal attorney, is to contact an experienced federal defense lawyer. There are several reasons for this with the first being that the attorney can speak on your behalf with federal authorities. This is in the benefit of both the federal agents and the subject of the investigation because federal attorneys are able to assist in facilitating the meetings. David's client, Mary*, was under investigation for a massive $57 million Ponzi Scheme in Florida and Organized Fraud. She finds David from the Rossen Law Firm and gets him to represent her. David then shares his second step for federal investigations through Mary's story. He says the next thing to do is set up a meeting with the federal prosecutor on the case. He sets up a meeting called a Reverse Proffer which is when the federal prosecutors share with the defense counsel what evidence they have against the subject and what charges they are considering pursuing. David learns that the prosecutors were investigating Mary as a suspect in the case and then works to switch the narrative. He argues that Mary is a witness in the case and that she can provide a great deal of value to the authorities in progressing their investigation. David does this through a second meeting called a Proffer where the defendant meets with authorities to disclose information pertinent to the investigation while under legal protection. David's defense saved Mary from the burden of recompensing the $57 million, the legal consequences of white collar conspiracy, and a maximum of 20 years in prison. David recaps the keys of winning a federal case which are 1. Contacting a federal defense attorney early 2. Meeting with federal prosecutors 3. Negotiating with authorities 4. Familiarizing the subject with the process If you would like more information, contact the Criminal Defense Legal Team at the Rossen Law Firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
