It was translated by the renowned Buddhist sutra translator Amoghavajra during the Tang Dynasty. As the sutra discusses the principle of “benevolent kings protecting the nation,” it is also known as the Renwang Huguo Jing (Sutra of the Benevolent Kings Protecting the Nation), the New Translation of the Renwang Jing, or simply the Renwang Jing. 🌸The text is concise but rich in meaning. Since its introduction to China, it has been translated four times—by Dharmarakṣa during the Jin Dynasty, Kumārajīva during the Later Qin Dynasty, Jñānabhadra during the Liang Dynasty, and Amoghavajra during the Tang Dynasty. Of these four versions, the Jin and Liang translations are no longer extant. Only the versions by Kumārajīva and Amoghavajra remain, and while their content is essentially the same, their wording differs slightly. 🌸The title Renwang Huguo Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra carries profound meaning. “Benevolent Kings Protecting the Nation” refers to a king who, upon seeing the suffering of sentient beings, gives rise to compassion and uses his sovereign power to protect them—hence the term “benevolent king.” “Prajñāpāramitā,” one of the Six Pāramitās (Perfections), enables beings to cross from the shore of suffering to the shore of nirvana. Like a Dharma boat, the perfection of wisdom can safely carry all sentient beings to the other shore, where they may eternally enjoy bliss. Thus, prajñā is the essential Dharma method through which the benevolent king can govern and protect his realm. 🌸This sutra presents the Buddha’s teachings to King Prasenajit of India and fifteen other monarchs on how to safeguard the fruition of Buddhahood, practice the ten wholesome deeds of the ten bodhisattva grounds, and protect the nation. It states that reciting and upholding this sutra brings blessings and averts disasters, granting peace and happiness to all sentient beings. Together with the Lotus Sutra and the Golden Light Sutra, it is regarded as one of the Three Sutras for the Protection of the Nation. ✨There have been four known Chinese translations of the Renwang Huguo Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra: ✨The first translation was by Dharmarakṣa during the Western Jin Dynasty in the third year of Qinshi (267 CE), titled Renwang Prajñā Sūtra. ✨The second was by Kumārajīva during the Later Qin Dynasty in the third year of Hongshi (401 CE), titled Renwang Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra. ✨The third was by Jñānabhadra (Zhen Di) during the Liang Dynasty in the third year of Chengsheng (554 CE), titled Renwang Prajñā Sūtra. ✨The fourth was by Amoghavajra during the Tang Dynasty in the first year of Yongtai (765 CE), titled Renwang Huguo Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra. ✨The version most commonly used today is the one translated by Master Kumārajīva during the Later Qin Dynasty. 🌈Beginning in the first year of Yongding under Emperor Wu of the Chen Dynasty (559 CE), China began holding Renwang Huguo Dharma Assemblies, during which the Renwang Huguo Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra was recited to pray for the dispelling of calamities and disasters, and for the peace and prosperity of the nation and its people.
