How did Texas fall into Confederate hands without a single shot fired? In this episode, we uncover the dramatic and little‑known story of the Confederate takeover of federal property in Texas—a pivotal moment that unfolded just as Abraham Lincoln prepared to take office on March 4, 1861. By the time Lincoln assumed the presidency, seven states—including Texas—had already seceded, and Confederate leaders moved quickly to seize forts, arsenals, and military supplies across the South. In Texas, this effort began on February 4, 1861, only three days after the state approved its secession ordinance. The newly formed Committee of Public Safety took charge of removing federal authority and securing all U.S. installations within the state. Central to the Texas takeover was General David E. Twiggs, the commander of the U.S. Department of Texas. A southerner sympathetic to secession, Twiggs oversaw the peaceful withdrawal of federal troops—and ultimately surrendered all U.S. property in Texas. When tensions rose and negotiations stalled, Texas leaders called on Ben McCulloch, who gathered nearly 1,000 armed men and surrounded federal positions in San Antonio. [31 Confede...r of Texas | Word] In this episode, you’ll learn: Why Lincoln considered seceded states “in rebellion,” not a separate nation How Texas began seizing federal property just days after its secession vote Why General Twiggs cooperated with Confederate authorities—and how it led to his arrest How Ben McCulloch’s militia pressured U.S. troops into surrender How 160 federal soldiers agreed to turn over weapons, abandon forts, and leave Texas by sea—all without combat [31 Confede...r of Texas | Word] Why the Confederacy viewed Texas as strategically vital during the opening days of the Civil War This moment—overlooked in many Civil War narratives—reveals how quickly national authority collapsed in the Deep South and how Texas became fully integrated into the Confederate war effort before Lincoln even arrived in Washington.
