Despite the Cruise accident in which it dragged a pedestrian over the tarmac, and its subsequent demise as a player in the robotaxi industry, the self-driving car has flourished. Waymo has been expanding its service to several cities and has been operating with relatively few accidents. I review some more recently posted rides and demonstrate why Waymo's still don't drive well, even if they have been able to avoid big accidents. Robotaxis remain a very bad idea. However, supervised autonomous driving--Tesla FSD--is not much better. My previous podcasts on self-driving cars, and why software drivers are inferior to human drivers. Oct 27, 2022 The trouble with self-driving cars An analysis of a test drive that @DirtyTesla took with Tesla FSD 10.69.2.2 in Ann Arbor, Michigan that illustrates many of the fundamental challenges for self-driving cars. Feb4, 2023 What a self-driving car still can’t see A podcast in which I address self-driving car perception, and how it differs from human vision. April 8, 2023 How a self-driving car experiences time A podcast on how the way a self-driving car works implies a certain “experience of time”--being born again with every sensor sweep–that is quite different from the way human beings perceive time. September 2, 2023 Self-driving cars have no moral judgment Of course self-driving cars have no moral judgment, they just execute a program. But when people drive, they use moral judgments all the time: it is why we get angry about other people, but more importantly, it is how we make all driving decisions. If you can’t make moral driving decisions, you have no business sharing our roads. November 16, 2023 How to assess “autonomous vehicle safety” Technologists argue that the only way we can access autonomous vehicle safety is through comparing statistics. But this means we have to let them drive many many miles, as we only collect statistics about severe accidents, and they don’t happen so frequently, although still too often. Moreover, we would be comparing autonomous vehicles with some truly terrible human drivers, often driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, distracted by their phones, or sleeping. There are better ways to assess whether a driver is competent. December 1, 2023 Autonomous vehicles can’t interact Autonomous vehicles can’t interact. Direct interactions between road users occur only when two road users miscommunicate, or in a special situations, such as road work or accidents. Autonomous vehicles can’t interact, so they have trouble in all these situations. February 7, 2024 Autonomous vehicles cannot follow the rules of the road Following the rules of the road is something quite different from executing a computer program, even if that program is supposed to implement ‘the rules of the road.’ Instead following the rules of the road requires common sense and judgment, two things computer programs do not possess.
