Welcome to #EdLeighsMoneySavingSnowTips | Ep18 | Mont Blanc Massif Don’t dismiss Chamonix and the Mont Blanc Massif as purely for the rich as there are plenty of bargains if you know where to look. The Vagabond is actually pretty central and cheap as is Chamonix’s new fancy but actually reasonably-priced Folie Douce hotel but as a rule avoid staying in central Chamonix to keep your costs down. Look at Le Vert towards the climbing wall or HI Hostel up towards the glacier (or what’s left of the glacier anyway!). Accommodation is even cheaper in Servoz or St.Gervais, which are 30 and 45 minutes away on the train respectively. St Gervais has its own ski area, which is good for beginners and intermediates, and if you get the bigger Mont Blanc pass you can ski all of Chamonix’s resorts too. At the other end of the valley is Vallorcine, which is also on the train line, around 30 mins from Chamonix, through some properly stunning scenery. Accommodation is cheaper here too and it’s linked to the super fun slopes of Le Tour. Trains between St.Gervais and Vallorcine are free with a Carte d’Hote (guest card), which your accommodation provider should be able to give you. Chamonix does have a tonne of Airbnb options. And with the top top of Les Grand Montets closed this winter (after the lift was destroyed in a fire), if you hike up to the summit you can have all that amazing terrain pretty much to yourself and a few other hardcore folk for 27 euros.
