Journey - Don't Stop Believin' - Drew Dawson Davis https://drewdawsondavis.com/ If you'd like more info on signing up for voice lessons/songwriting please visit my website. The song Don't Stop Believin' by the American rock band Journey was released in October of 1981 as the second single from the group's seventh studio album Escape. Hard to believe this is all analog.....and from what I've heard was done in one take. (facepalm) I wish I had that much talent on my best day ever. I had to sing this a couple of times to get it right. What can you say about this song besides "It totally Rocks!" There's not one person on this planet who doesn't know this song as it's been sang on various hit TV shows from Glee to America's Got Talent by Richard Goodall who won that show, and it has been performed by many different singers/artists over the years. And now, yours truly. :-) Early on in the 80's Journey added Jonathan Cain on keyboards, the band's newest member developed the song's title. It stemmed from something his father frequently told him when he was a struggling musician living on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard. Cain was unsuccessful and ready to give up and each time he would call home in despair his father would tell him, "Don't stop believing or you're done!" Thus this came to be the title of the song's name. Cain and Perry thought the imagery brought to mind a story of two people leaving behind past lives in their hometown and boarding a midnight train to anywhere else. Perry liked the concept that the characters would be a girl from a small town and a boy raised in the city. They felt that every young person has a dream and sometimes where you grow up isn't where you're destined to be. Funny enough they mentioned that there really is no “South Detroit” as anything south of the center of town is really the Detroit River then Windsor Canada. That made me laugh. I've been there and on another fun thought, it's weird to be able to go south to get to Canada from Michigan but that's how it is. They mentioned this in an interview that they tried east and west and north Detroit but none of them sang very well so “South Detroit” stuck. A small tidbit that's fun to think about. I've always wanted to sing like Steve Perry. He was my Idol as a child. My dad would play their records and it just sounded so amazing. Like music...like...bigger than life music. Like Star Wars next level kinda music. Between that and Steve Winwood, and Foreigner, Kansas etc...which are all my regular favs now. I listened to my dad's music as I feel like the best records were kinda made in that generation of the best analog stuff. But Steve's voice and Journey's music with Neil Schon on Guitar just was it for me. I never could sing like him and when I started listening to country music in the 90's as a young kid I couldn't sing as low as many of them even though Garth was my major influence then. Later on even as I reached into my late teens I just didn't have that low end so I started looking for high male singers and Gary Levox was really the only one doing it back then. So...?? Thus...you're hearing a guy who wanted to sing like Steve Perry who fell into Country music and sang Rascal Flatts stuff. I wish music sounded like this nowadays. There are songs I love, but there aren't as many as there were back in the day. It seems like there were so many great songs being made back then that you couldn't even listen to them all. Even amazing tracks wouldn't even make it into the top 10 because the music was so great and in such abundance supply back then. But now...I surf and surf and surf.....I hate to be hard on the singers/artists now, cause there are great ones and the business is so difficult... but....this is the kind of music that makes my heart sing and I wish we had more of it nowadays. Something that sounds like music. So as life and time goes forward, don't stop believin' in yourself or your dreams. I hope you enjoy this one. Peace & God Bless, Drew
