Clydebank was devastated by Luftwaffe air raids over the nights of 13th and 14th March 1941, the town's housing was almost completely destroyed, very few were left intact. There were huge gaps in between buildings were the tennements once stood. Clydebank is largely famous for it's history of shipbuilding and the Singer sewing machine factory. Both are now gone. John Browns yard built the three Queens, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth II, otherwise known as the QE2. But they are only 3 of many, many others. My father worked on the QE2 and I was just over a year old when she was launched and she holds a special place in my heart. The liner that is!!! We lived in the tennement that overlooked Browns yard but I was too young to remember the great liner that was being constructed in or back court. Back yard as my American friends would call it. River of Fire: The Clydebank Blitz is a book written by John MacLeod and tells the story of the Clydebank Blitz and the terrible scale of death and devastation, speculating on why its incineration has been so widely forgotten and its ordeal denied any place in national honour. If you get a chance then I recommend that you read this true story.
