This masjid has a long history that goes back to the 8th century. Here is a brief history of this Masjid. During the Fatimid Caliphate, Cairo was declared the capital of the Caliphate, and a decision was made to construct a masjid as a base to spread the Ismaili sect of Shi'a Islam in the region. The construction of the masjid started in 970, and in 972 the masjid was opened to the public. In 1171, the great Salahuddin overthrew the Fatimids and took over the area. He made many changes, including to the structures and the daily activities of the masjid. Eventually, he turned it into a Sunni Masjid. Salahuddin also introduced the college system in Egypt. Under this system, the college was a separate institution within the mosque compound, with its own classrooms, dormitories, and a library, which eventually became the prestigious Al-Azhar University of today. After the Ayyubid dynasty, the Mamluk Sultanate took over the area and made significant repairs and restorations to the masjid, which had been neglected for over 100 years.
