This is a folk song I wrote back in the eighties after my younger brother was killed in action in then South West Africa at the height of the South African Bush War. Soldier Boy Dave Mason 1987 Soldier Boy, why did you go when battle’s bugle called you? If you’d stayed the price you’d have paid would be less that what they paid you You went away one fine day, a young man to be proud of To country far and to a war in places never heard of. Soldier Boy, why did you go up to those distant borders You hope to thrive, to stay alive, obeying someone’s orders For this land you made a stand knowing in your conscience That one more life, one more sacrifice, would make no earthly difference. CH: It’s nothing new we’ve always played this game before We give them all we have then send them off to war Words like love and peace weigh heavy on my mind But in reality, we’ve left them far behind….. Soldier Boy, why did you die, they say you’re not returning My eyes are red from tears I’ve shed, my heart is sore from yearning Although you’re gone, this world goes on and it’s not getting better We hurt, we lie, we crucify like hell’s infernal debtor. Soldier Boy, your smile is gone, your memory still lingers I often find you on my mind just slipping through my fingers Maybe when we meet again in some eternal glory Then I’ll know why you had to go - pages missing from my life story. CH: Soldier Boy, I miss you so, I miss your joy, your laughter They try to get me to forget the memories I run after I often wish I could forget, confuse you for another Though life is cheap, the hurt runs deep, and I’ll always miss you, brother….
