“When the police salute power instead of the Constitution, justice becomes negotiable.” India’s police force was never designed to serve the people, it was built in 1861 to serve the British Crown. And 160+ years later, that colonial DNA still lingers. Today, political interference in policing isn’t the exception, it’s the operating manual. From arbitrary transfers to selective investigations, from shielding the powerful to targeting dissenters, the police are often caught between the law and the ruling party’s will. 📌 A 2019 survey found that 72% of Delhi Police officers admitted to facing political pressure during investigations. 📌 India’s conviction rate in IPC crimes is just 44%, and even lower in politically sensitive cases. 📌 The Padmanabhaiah Committee (2000) and Malimath Committee (2003) both warned: “Without operational independence, impartial policing is impossible.” 📌 The Supreme Court’s Prakash Singh judgment (2006) laid down 7 binding directives to insulate police from politics yet most states have ignored them. The result? – Justice delayed, distorted, or denied. – Public trust eroded. – Law enforcement turned into a political tool. And while we demand accountability from the judiciary, media, and bureaucracy, we forget that a democracy without an independent police force is a democracy in name only. It’s time to ask: Who do the police really serve the people, or the party in power?
