Ballade No. 3 in f minor, Op. 85, No. 2 by Franz Xaver Scharwenka performed by Matthew Zisi, piano For a free copy of the sheet music, please click here: https://imslp.org/wiki/2_Ballads%2C_O...) The final ballade of Scharwenka (unless there's another I haven't discovered yet) is a dramatic piece simple in its writing, yet powerful in its playing! What do I mean by that? Well, for one thing, it's repetitive, which makes it easier for pianists to learn--you get these 20 measures down, you've already got those 20 down--ah, but things never come back exactly the same way in this piece. The lyrical B section, for instance, is in A-flat major with triplet accompaniment the first time its heard. The second time, it's in B Major, but it switches back to A-flat--only, by the time it gets back to A-flat, the triplets have morphed into sixteenth notes. Perhaps the hardest feature of the piece is the octave jumps at the end of the A sections--until you realize that the jumps are all exactly the same distance--you still have to keep your eyes on the keys, but do that, and these aren't as tough as they look. I hope you enjoy!
