Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the U.S. Dr. David Tom Cooke, head of thoracic surgery at UC Davis Health, explains the causes of lung cancer, common symptoms to watch for, and the most effective treatment options available today. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 230,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, and nearly 130,000 will die from the disease. The key to survival is early detection—but most lung cancers are not found until it’s too late. Lung cancer screening saves lives, yet very few people get screened. Nationally, only 6% of eligible individuals get screened for lung cancer. In California, it’s even worse—just 1%, the lowest screening rate in the country, according to the American Lung Association.
