Motor vehicle accidents with teenagers here in Massachusetts. Good afternoon. My name is Neil Burns. I'm an attorney along with my partner Roshan Jain. We represent victims of motor vehicle accidents here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and I've been doing so for almost 40 years now. I have a lot of experience with motor vehicle accidents and some of 'em very tragic, some of them, fortunately, people are injured and get better but the accidents with teenagers are sad, and they're unfortunately too frequent and we've had too many of them. But what we look for is what we call the SADCSP, the S-A-D-C-S-P, and we'll go over that. Now, if you are a parent or a teenager you should be looking at these things. And if you're a victim of an accident where a teenager was involved or anyone, frankly we look at these things First is s Seatbelt All cases. All the time. Everyone should be wearing a seatbelt. It saves lives. It saves, it saves people from being ejected. It saves people from being too badly injured. And if you look at the Princess Die case, four people in the car, three people wearing seatbelt, three people not wearing seatbelts, all died. The one person wearing a seatbelt is still alive today. Alcohol, obviously a factor. Not always people who are drunk, but people who are impaired. We look for that every single time. Were they at a restaurant? Were they at home? Even if they just had one drink, it comes up, it affects things and it affects their ability to, uh, to react quickly in a case. Drugs, same thing with alcohol. People can smell it. A witness can smell it on a person, if you smell it in a person that perpetrated the accident. If you smelled it on the other person, you can testify to that. See cell phone. We see this all the time in distracted driving. People using their cell phones. We can get the records or you can testify that you saw them in the, in the rear of your window or coming at you, you saw them on their cell phone. There's witnesses that can testify to that too, and we can get the records. Of course, speeding. This is a factor a lot in teenage cases. People driving too fast, they're not experienced. They swerve and they hit a guardrail, a pole, a tree. I've had every one of those cases, and they can cause very serious injuries, speeding. And the final one is passengers. Teenagers shouldn't have a lot of passengers. If as a teenager or driving with a car full of people, it's a recipe for disaster sometimes and there's more, more distractions, more people talking, yelling, screaming, distracting the driver.
