In this video, our experienced urologist discusses the risks and benefits of prostate cancer treatment options for older patients. When it comes to treating prostate cancer, age plays a significant role. Most of the patients I diagnose with prostate cancer are around 75 years old. In such cases, we need to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits before making a treatment decision. Surgery is one option often considered. While surgery is not a guaranteed solution, many patients undergo surgery without any complications. However, there is a risk of impotence and incontinence associated with surgery, which can understandably worry older patients. As a surgeon, I always present all available choices to my patients in an unbiased manner. Radiation therapy is another treatment option we discuss with patients. Even though I am a surgeon, if achieving the same benefit with radiation is possible, I support this option for older patients. Ultimately, it is the patient's choice to make. During our discussions, we thoroughly explore both the positive and negative aspects of radiation therapy as well as surgery. Armed with this information, patients can make an informed decision that aligns with their preferences. One advantage of radiation therapy is that it does not require a surgical procedure. This can be attractive to individuals who prefer a non-invasive approach. Additionally, radiation therapy generally results in decreased post-treatment leakage compared to surgery. At the Advanced Urology Institute, our priority is to provide personalized and comprehensive care to our patients. We aim to empower our patients to make the best decisions based on their unique circumstances. Jay, MD (Board Certified Urologist at Naples, FL): Most of the guys that I'm diagnosing with prostate cancer are 75, okay? So when you're talking about a treatment, you have to look at the risks and the benefits. Of course, with surgery can come, it's not a guarantee. Some patients go through surgery without any problems, but then you have a risk of impotence and incontinence. Now, when a guy's in his 75 years of age, and you talk about that, they're frightened about that. If I could achieve the same benefit with radiation, I would do it, even though I'm a surgeon, okay? It's not a choice that I make, it's a choice that I give the patient. We talk about the positives and negatives of radiation, we talk about the positives and negatives of surgery, and then they make their decision. Christopher M. Sherman, MD (Board Certified Urologist at Largo, FL): Advantage of radiation, you don't have to go through a surgical procedure, you typically have less leakage afterwards, so that can be appealing to people. --- Advanced Urology Institute www.advancedurologyinstitute.com Advanced Urology Institute is the largest urology practice in Florida.
