What happens when you take your home on wheels in China to 4,000 meters in the middle of winter? This week, we drive our Land Rover Defender toward the high plateaus of western China to find out! From the Yunnan–Sichuan border toward Chengdu, we explore the dramatic valleys of Yading National Park and chase the iconic summit of Mount Yala rising alone above the frozen grasslands. Along the way, we pass herds of yaks beneath prayer flags, discover glowing golden rooftops in the most unexpected places, and meet locals who move through this altitude like it’s sea level—while we’re left catching our breath. At over 4,000 meters. Headaches roll in, icy winds erase the midday sun, and finding a sheltered valley to sleep becomes the mission.
