The Reaction of Himmler, Hitler and Göring when they Were Told that the End Had Arrived

As the Third Reich crumbled in its final days, the inner circle of Nazi leadership was faced with the grim reality of their imminent defeat. On April 28, 1945, General Gotthard Heinrici, one of the Wehrmacht’s most skilled defensive commanders, delivered the crushing news that Germany’s eastern front had completely collapsed. The Soviet forces were advancing with unstoppable momentum toward Berlin, and Heinrici’s defensive lines were shattered. For Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Göring, and Adolf Hitler, this was the moment they could no longer ignore the inevitable. Adolf Hitler’s reaction to the news was one of denial and anger. Isolated in his bunker beneath the Reich Chancellery in Berlin, Hitler had already become increasingly disconnected from the reality of the war. He refused to accept Heinrici’s assessment and lashed out in a furious tirade, blaming his generals and accusing them of treachery. Hitler, ever the ideologue, believed that through sheer willpower and loyalty, the German forces could still turn the tide. His refusal to confront the truth of their situation marked the final descent into delusion as the Soviet Army closed in on the capital. Himmler’s reaction was more pragmatic, yet equally tragic in its consequences. By this point, the head of the SS had already begun secret negotiations with the Allies, hoping to secure a personal deal to save himself. However, when Heinrici reported the collapse, Himmler’s hopes of bargaining for his own survival began to disintegrate. Caught between loyalty to Hitler and his own survival instincts, Himmler attempted to distance himself from the impending collapse, a move that would soon be discovered and lead to his downfall. Hermann Göring’s reaction was marked by opportunism. The Luftwaffe chief had long seen himself as Hitler’s successor, and as the situation grew more desperate, he made a bold attempt to seize power. After receiving Heinrici’s report, Göring sent a telegram to Hitler, suggesting that he take over leadership of the Reich, as Hitler was unable to continue. This act of ambition was seen by Hitler as a betrayal, leading to Göring’s fall from grace in the final hours of the Nazi regime. Heinrici’s grim news had sent shockwaves through the Nazi leadership, exposing their fractured loyalty and desperation as the end drew near.
