In the cutthroat world of media, where influence often masquerades as opportunity, I've always held one principle sacred: integrity over everything. Building ‘The Sunday Indian’ magazine—the only news weekly to ever come out globally in 14 languages for many years till 2015—from the ground up wasn't just about creating content—it was about creating it fearlessly, without bending to corporate whims, government pressures, or international agendas. Happy to note in this video clip from Jashn-e-Adab festival 2024, that of the 1000 odd people who worked in our media company between 2005 & 2019, at least one person— Saurabh Sahi, an editor with the highest level of integrity and intellect whose every piece I used to love— remembered and spoke of those principles based on which we built our media house, even years after leaving! When a dear friend shared this clip recently, I was also reminded of the time in 2008-2009, the height of the subprime mortgage crisis. Our magazine was scraping by, desperate for ad revenue to survive. That's when an offer landed on my desk via a colleague—an arrangement from the Israeli Ambassador for "Visit Israel" ads, in exchange for muzzling one of our writers who was critically covering Israeli actions in the Middle East. I turned it down flat, without a second thought or even informing the writer involved. Later, I came to know that the Israelis themselves shared their frustration with the writer about how their attempt to "influence" us had failed because of my refusal. I remember later, Ambassador Mark Sofer even visited our office to deliver a speech, hoping to "clarify" their policies and soften our stance. But we didn't budge. No ads, no favors, no compromises. And this ethos extended far beyond: we rejected similar overtures from local corporates, political entities, and international players time and again. Our journalism was raw, unfiltered, and unapologetic—calling out injustices wherever we saw them, be it in India or anywhere internationally… politically or in the world of business. In my editorials I made it clear that we will remain anti establishment, irrespective of who was in power; Because that was the role of media. But standing firm comes at a cost. For refusing to play the game, I paid the ultimate price. A barrage of false accusations rained down on every initiative I'd built—my educational institutions, my media ventures, everything. It led to shutdowns, legal battles, and relentless scrutiny. Yet, even in the face of it all, I'd make the same choices again. True leadership isn't about survival; it's about legacy. It's about building something that inspires, even if it means standing alone against the tide. #IntegrityFirst #MediaEthics #thesundayindian #arindamchaudhuri #Journalism #DareToThinkBeyond #planmanmedia www.dailyindian.com
