Gu Gu Bo Ki’s alluring melody comes from the Hainanese folk song 《久久不见, 久久见》 (Gu Gu Bo Ki, Gu Gu Ki), a hugely popular tune in the Qiongzhou strait – a Chinese strait between Guangdong and Hainan. The theme of this piece surrounds friendship and the call from two friends reminiscing, unlike most dialect music which involves love, or loss. Written in a call-and-response fashion, the piece starts off with a call by the Sheng that will elicit a response from the ensemble. All the other seven instruments, representing Bayin – the eight sounds used in Hainanese music, will call out for each other before playing together in waves of unison – symbolising the dynamic and yet nostalgic feelings one gets from friends and friendship.
