In this video lecture, I talk about simulated altitude training for high altitude hikers and mountaineers. And I answer the big question: "Can altitude training help prevent altitude sickness?" High altitude adventures are getting more and more accessible for the everyday adventurer. And, rightfully so, surviving and performing in a high altitude environment is a big concern for many. While the standard advice here is to spend some training time at moderate altitude, or allow some extra days or weeks before a trip for acclimatisation, unfortunately, for many, this is not a practical solution. And because of this, simulated altitude training is often seen as the shining light. Training in an altitude chamber or tent is claimed to improve just about everything under the sun, from reducing the risk of altitude sickness, 'pre-acclimatisation, improving muscle strength and improving endurance performance. But while great in theory, does it live up to the hype? And specifically, can simulated altitude training help with pre acclimatisation and reduce the risk of altitude sickness? One big issue with this type of training is many people misunderstand the research. While there is plenty of promising research to support this type of training (which is often used as 'evidence' by people selling these products), there are some important distinctions to make to ensure you get a clear picture of the available science. And in this video lecture, we will explore these claims and the science behind it, so you can have the knowledge to make the most informed decision possible. In this video, you will learn: What is altitude training (understanding the difference between terrestrial, hypobaric and normobaric altitude) How commercial altitude chambers and tents work Can simulated altitude training help prevent altitude sickness?
