SOUNDBITE: (French) Nicolas Sarkozy, French Interior Minister: "Yes of course, I asked this question - to know how long Iraq will need an exterior force. He told me that no one is capable of answering that question. Some say one year, some say two years, some say three years. But obviously that's the objective because Iraq needs to freely choose its future." 10. Sarkozy and his entourage and convoy leaving STORYLINE: Iraqi President Jalal Talibani met France's Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris on Friday. Sarkozy told reporters after talks with the Iraqi leader at the at the Hotel Meurice that he has asked how long Iraq will need an exterior force. "He told me that no one is capable of answering that question. Some say one year, some say two years, some say three years. But obviously that's the objective because Iraq needs to choose its future," Sarkozy said. The meeting comes a day after the Iraqi leader told French President President Jacques Chirac that Iraq could send US led troops home in two to three years, once the country has set up its own domestic security forces. During his six day visit to France, Talabani is expected to push for closer ties with France who strongly opposed the U.S - led invasion. Amid continued shootings, bombings and abductions in Iraq three years after the U.S.-led invasion, many in the United States and elsewhere have questioned how much longer coalition forces should stay. The war in Iraq is the top issue for voters before next week's congressional elections in the United States, polls say. In September, Talabani told the United Nations that coalition forces should remain in Iraq until Iraqi security forces were "capable of putting an end to terrorism and maintaining stability and security." France is not calling for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, but French diplomats have said that announcing a schedule for a gradual pullout would help soothe tensions in Iraq.
