Here are the reasons why the Minimoog is totally overpriced, overvalued and basically a big scam: 1. Feature Set is Super Basic Monophonic: One note at a time. No chords. No presets (on the original and reissue): You can’t save or recall sounds. No MIDI (on the original models): Only CV/gate. No effects, no arpeggiator, no sequencer — features that are standard even on $300 synths today. You're paying thousands for something that can feel functionally limited compared to a $600 digital synth. *** 2. Old-School Design = Expensive to Make, Not Feature-Rich It uses discrete analog components, hand-soldered boards, and through-hole parts. That’s labor-intensive, but doesn’t add features, just nostalgia and character. It’s like paying Ferrari prices for a go-kart with a beautiful wooden steering wheel. *** 3. Sound Can Be Emulated Cheaply Soft synths like Arturia’s Mini V, or Behringer’s hardware Poly D, get very close for a fraction of the price. Unless you’re in a studio with golden ears and a good sound system, most people won’t hear the difference in a mix. So the Minimoog becomes more of a luxury good than a necessity. *** 4. You’re Paying for the Name & Nostalgia Moog is legendary. The Minimoog is iconic. But you’re paying a huge premium for the vibe, the history, and the badge — not necessarily the specs or versatility. It’s like buying a vintage Rolex when a $100 Seiko tells time better. *** Bad Value Compared to Modern Synths For the same $5,000, you could get: 2-3 very good poly-synths Plus a drum machine, effects pedal, and a MIDI controller. Or you could give in to the illusion. The more real the illusion becomes, the more they want it.
