Buying and Stringing Kartals Come practice karatalas with us at: http://www.24hourkirtanmayapur.com/ Shape: Some kartals have a lipped rim, whereas others are flat. Different devotees have different preferences so try both out if possible and see what feels more comfortable. I find without the rim are a little softer in sound so better for indoor kirtans whereas the lipped rim kartals may suit an outdoor Harinama better. I also find lipped rim kartals a little more difficult to control st faster speeds but some kirtaneers may not have any problems. Size: Similarly the kartals come in various sizes and the smaller would suit more gentle, intimate kirtans; larger kartals for a large Harinama. I have a medium size so I can accommodate to gentler kirtans in the dead of the night and fired up rip-roaring kirtans during the day. Material: Most kartals are made of brass or bell-metal. I recommend going for bell-metal where possible as the sound is sweeter and less harsh. Often kartals get a bad reputation for sounding harsh and out of tune because often they are so try to pick sweet sounding kartals when buying them. Tuning: Each kartal has a specific pitch and this is important when buying your kartals. Often the pairs are unmatched and this is a problem if the pitch of the two are dissonant or out of tune. Ideally the pitch of the two should be the same, although harmonious yet different pitches can also work. Basically they should sound good together. Although not always possible, it is even better if the kartals are harmonious in pitch with the other instruments in the kirtan, especially other kartals being used. If you have the facility, have several pairs of kartals, each tuned to a different pitch so you can use the appropriate pair for the kirtan. If you have several unmatched pairs, you can always try matching one kartal from one pair with another from another pair keeping harmony in mind. We will discuss the importance of harmonious kartals further in the etiquette section. You can test the tones before you buy as demonstrated in the video. Vraja Kishor prabhu also gives a nice demonstration and some tips on buying kartals 9 minutes into the video on the blog linked below. https://vicd108.wordpress.com/2014/12... Stringing: Aquire some comfortable material Cut to approximately the width and length of your forearm Twist as needed to squeeze material through kartal hole. May take some fiddling and pulling Cut a small split in the material you have pulled through (inside of the kartal) Use the two sides of the split to tie a tight knot Pull the material tightly from the other end (outside the kartal) so the knot tightens more. Cut the excess material as close to the knot as possible without compromising the knot Get ready to learn to play the kartals. http://www.mikeyjay108.org
